Aww, well thanks, I'm glad there are vets like you around willing to help out the little guys and gals with nothin but a dream and the 1px pencil that never hurts XD

Well, if you ever get the time maybe I could wrack your ear about perspective? I'm having a hardtime locking these first sprites into positions for animations. Sideways isn't much trouble but I realized in an rpg battle the character standing straight side profile doesn't look so hot.

I've been meaning to check these tutorials out.  You seem to be addressing a lot of points I'd like to practice, so having some ideas of how to approach things should be pretty useful.  Re: topic, I've always struggled with this whole anti-aliasing thing, but you make it look easy here.  I'll have to try this out and see where it goes!

Ahhh thank you, so happy to hear :.D AA can be intimidating to approach but then it'll randomly click and you're randomly all like "ZOMGIGETIT"

Yeah, so I hear.  My biggest problem's not the actual technique, which I kind of understand now, but the color selection.  Since a lot of the stuff I'm making is stuff I'd want to use in games, the AA color would have to work against different backgrounds with different color combinations, and so finding something like that's pretty difficult without resorting to semitransparency (which a lot of people consider to be cheating).

Ohhhh, yessss, I see what you mean for sure for sure. With video game graphics, it's actually a lot easier to just not AA the outside of the character at all. Either have a darker outline (The inside can be AA'd) or just have a colored outline or no outline at all, but it's deffs easier to not try to AA the outer edges because of the exact problem you mentioned

I wasn't actually thinking about the game sprites, but about the textbox portraits.  In general my sprites are too small to AA anyway.  But the style I had in mind for a project I was working on has the portraits extending outside of the textbox, so that they overlap with the game, and I didn't really want to use a heavy outline for them because it went against the style I wanted.  Oh well.  Back to the drawing board!

OHHHHHHHH Now I PROPERLY I SEE WHAT YOU MEAN XD I love it when portraits extend out of the text box, adds an extra little umph :D Are the portraits going to be pixelled too? You'll figure something out, got a smart brain in your head so you'll tote's come up with some creative solution!

Yeah, the portraits will be pixeled; I prefer for a game to use consistent art styles.  Having pixel art sprites and backgrounds and HD portraits is...jarring to me.  That said, I'm not even sure if I'll be messing with a game project right now; things are getting pretty busy lately, so who knows where that'll go.

I like that you mentioned that a minimalist approach to AA is best. Too much of it often blurs or muddies an image, especially because we're doing it manually and with limited colors, so we lack the accuracy that software designed for AA would have. And you're definitely right in saying that if you need to keep adding colors to get it right, you should probably just let it go. We're doing pixel art after all; the audience will forgive a little blockiness here and there.

I would add, though, that if you shape your clusters well, you often don't need any at all. AA is a bit dangerous to use sometimes, since pixel space is at a premium; there are times when even a single pixel of AA might be too much. I've been trying to find ways to work around it and had some success simply by using better shapes. Sometimes there's just no way around it though—you either deal with a slightly jagged line or a slight blur.

Thank you so much! :D That's a good point, going with no AA at all. Sometimes it is the best option you can go with if you simply don't have enough room or if it's not necessary.

I've been considering doing up a ramble page about "pixel steps" or staircases or whatever they're referred to as so that would be an excellent thing to cover is doing clusters in a manner that they don't need to be AA'd at all via pixel staircasing the edge of the clusters. Thanks a bunch for that good point of inspiration :D

Great example is StavaEY , they have the most beautiful clusters I've seen and use very very little to no AA on them, like Castle Scene by StavaEY

Hi and thanks for this new tutorial !

Well, from the pixelation repository page, I read about meta-cluster but I never understood from the example how to create them correctly. If you happen to be familiar with this notion, I'd really love to read more about it because I've never seen any other tutorial about meta cluster.

HUH. I actually never heard the term metacluster until now. Thank you, I got something new to study :D From what I've gathered, metaclusters seem to be groups of clusters working toward a common goal. Say I have two big clusters touching and I add a smaller cluster to "tie the two big ones together" it would be a network of meta-clusters.

BUT. I WILL READ ABOUT THIS META-CLUSTER BUSINESS FURTHER AND DISCUSS THE TERM WITH MY ARTIST FRIENDS AND RETURN TO YOU WITH A TUTORIAL. MARK MY WORK MY FRIEND, MARK MY WORD.

I had already seen those. They are very good guides and helped me to get a better grasp with colors in my pieces, but I still make a lot of errors.

In fact after reading the first guide of those I tried to make a "general" color pallete, but I'm not fully satisfied with it.

Eiiiii, it's already most certainly on the right track! The palette suits your pixel style! When I first started getting in to pixels and palettes, I actually used and modified existing palettes other pixel artists had for my first few pixel pieces. It helped me grasp exactly what I was looking for in a palette.

In fact it was syosa 's palette I used  and studied ( i.imgur.com/LYbZagv.gif )
